The Huge Curtain    Part Two: The Tear                     Matthew 27:51             Victory Bible Class   March 16, 2011
This week we continue a three part series on the veil in the Temple in Jerusalem.

*      The Tear(March 16)
*      The Approach(March 23)

When Jesus lived, the temple in Jerusalem was divided by a huge curtain, keeping people out of the 'holy of holies' - the holiest place. The Temple curtain in front of the holy of holies was 22 yards high, 11 yards wide and about 3 inches thick. That would make the weight between 4 to 6 tons. In fact the Talmud notes that it took some 300 priests to carry it. –copied

Matthew 27:51 (NKJV)
Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split,

Luke 23:45 (NKJV)
Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two.

Mark 15:38 (NKJV)
Then the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.

The Tearing of the Veil
ü  Not natural decay
ü  Not caused by earthquake
ü  Torn in only two pieces
ü  From top to bottom (of divine origin)
ü  Coincidence or act of God? (precise moment of “It is finished” cry)
ü  The cry and the tear occurred at 3 PM
ü  The time of the evening sacrifice
ü  The priest was in the Holy Place in front of the veil
ü  God meant the tear to be seen
ü  God meant the tear to be pondered

God is never early or late, but always on time
 “Things don’t just happen to us who love God,
They’re planned by His own dear hand,
Then molded and shaped, and timed by His clock,
Things don’t just happen–they’re planned.--Esther Fields

Conclusion

Balancing the Christian Life

 (The Four “Ds” of a Balanced Christian Life)

1.  Dedication       that you present your bodies a living sacrifice Romans 12:1 (NKJV)

2.  Discipline       But if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.                                   Romans 8:13

3.  Dependence    I say then, walk by the Spirit and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh.Galatians 5:16

4.  Development   But if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.            1 John 1:7 (HCSB)

Romans 12:1-10 (HCSB)

Therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God. For by the grace given to me, I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he should think. Instead, think sensibly, as God has distributed a measure of faith to each one. Now as we have many parts in one body, and all the parts do not have the same function, in the same way we who are many are one body in Christ and individually members of one another. According to the grace given to us, we have different gifts: If prophecy, use it according to the standard of faith; if service, in service; if teaching, in teaching; if exhorting, in exhortation; giving, with generosity; leading, with diligence; showing mercy, with cheerfulness. Love must be without hypocrisy. Detest evil; cling to what is good. 10Show family affection to one another with brotherly love. Outdo one another in showing honor.

Hope to see you this Sunday.

Bro. Billy

18 For God’s wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth, 19 since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. 20 From the creation of the world His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what He has made. As a result, people are without excuse. 21 For though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became nonsense, and their senseless minds were darkened. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man, birds, four-footed animals, and reptiles. 24 Therefore God delivered them over in the cravings of their hearts to sexual impurity, so that their bodies were degraded among themselves. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served something created instead of the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. 26 This is why God delivered them over to degrading passions. For even their females exchanged natural sexual intercourse for what is unnatural. 27 The males in the same way also left natural sexual intercourse with females and were inflamed in their lust for one another. Males committed shameless acts with males and received in their own persons the appropriate penalty for their perversion. 28 And because they did not think it worthwhile to have God in their knowledge, God delivered them over to a worthless mind to do what is morally wrong.
